Fens Waterway Link

The Black Sluice Lock

The Fens Waterway Link is a major project to connect the rivers Witham, Glen, Welland, Nene and Ouse.

This is the most significant partnership for developing the inland waterway network for the UK in two centuries.

It will create a new circular waterway to improve access to recreation, tourism and the environment, opening up almost 150 miles of waterways in the east of England.

Black Sluice Navigation

The first major step in the Fens Waterway Link was the reopening of the Black Sluice Navigation in 2009.

A typical Fen drain, the 19-mile navigation is situated on the South Forty Foot Drain and provides navigation to the west of Boston in Lincolnshire. It hadn't been used as a navigation for nearly 40 years.

The project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the East Midlands Development Agency and Lincolnshire County Council.

See Black Sluice Lock for details about entering this navigation.
