Walk the Welland
Crowland and the River Welland
This is a grand walk under the famous fenland skies. Explore the ancient town of Crowland and experience the wildlife of remote stretches of the River Welland.
Start: Trinity Bridge, Crowland
Distance: 8.75 miles (14 kms)
Terrain: Country roads, tracks and riverbanks
Refreshments: Market café, shops and several inns in Crowland.
Things to know: A new footbridge at Four Mile Bar enables walkers to gain access to the walk from the north bank of the Welland. There is no parking at Four Mile Bar. There are no short cuts on this walk so once you start you need to go the full distance!
The Walk
From the Trinity Bridge follow North Street past the market café with its thatched roof incorporating a teacup and saucer. At the end cross the road onto a track (North Bank) leaving this after 100 yards over a stile on the left. Continue now along the bank top for two and a half miles to join a lane near Cloot House.
Keep ahead along the lane to a point just before it joins the A1073 where you will see St. Guthlac's Cross on the right. On the left, a footpath sign points down a track towards the River Welland.
Follow the track to Four Mile Bridge and turn left immediately before it along the riverbank. Continue for three and a half miles beside the river until you reach the road at Fen Bridge.
At this point in your walk you can choose your route. Without crossing the road turn left and follow the causeway path by the road with its sixteen little bridges. Alternatively cross the road and turn right over a stile to walk on grass beside The Lake. Both choices reach West Bank at the far end.
Climb the slope onto West Bank and turn right. Cross over once you reach West Street and follow back to Trinity Bridge.
